Dye Penetrant Inspection, also known as Dye / Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPT) or Penetrant Testing (PT), is a fast, economical, and widely used non-destructive testing method for detecting surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials, including metals, plastics, and ceramics. The technique is based on capillary action, allowing the liquid penetrant to seep into cracks or other surface discontinuities for precise detection.
At Vericore Inspections, the procedure begins with thorough cleaning of the test surface, followed by application of a coloured or fluorescent penetrant. After adequate penetration time, excess penetrant is removed, and a developer is applied in dry or liquid form to draw the penetrant from surface flaws. The test surface is then examined under natural light for colour contrast or ultraviolet (UV) light for fluorescent indications. Fluorescent Dye Penetrant Inspection (FDPI) provides maximum sensitivity, allowing even the smallest defects to be detected with confidence.
DPI is employed across critical industries such as aerospace, defence, submarine manufacturing, offshore, petrochemical, Aluminium Structure and stainless-steel fabrication. Vericore Inspections applies this method to components including stainless steel welded joints, copper, nickel, brass, aluminium alloy assemblies, turbine blades, castings, forgings, weld overlays, aerospace engine parts, and defence equipment. Our services ensure surface integrity, operational safety, and compliance with the highest industry standards.
